I got up around 7am as I was too cold to sleep any more. Had breakfast and phoned home to get my internet banking details anf then logged on and dud a few things and then used the internet to research Mulu and Brunei and both were looking complicated. Mulu required a return flight and accommodation was difficult and you needed to go on tours with guides and food was expensive so I wasn't sure I wanted that but it was a world heritage site with large amazing caves. Brunei accommodation was expensive but getting there was a 3pm or 8am bus. I went on couchsurfing and filled in a profile to try to maybe get somewhere to stay in Brunei ad I gad heard there were a lot of people willing there. Then I packed most of my things and had some more breakfast and decided to go for a walk and decide then as I used to do a lot of walking and thinking when I was younger. I walked to the end of a bit of land where there was a seahorse lighthouse and decided on the way that I would stay here another night as it was cheaper than Brunei or Mulu although double the price of Kuching. I tried to check the internet for places to stay but it didn't work properly. I headed back via a WWII memorial and was going to be late back as check out time was 12. I managed to load Agoda as Hostelworld wouldn't work and the place I was staying was ok so I tried to book another night but it didn't work. Eventually I got back to the hostel and the WiFi worked but my card didn't and so I used another card to pay and went in to the hostel who were ok with me having another night in the same (crappy) room. I had some lunch nearby, chicken and rice which was good for just 4 ringgit and I bought a drink because sometimes I feel you are supposed to but it was not good, they didn't have a menu and he charged 3 ringgit for it. I spent a bit more time on the internet as that was the point in staying here a night was to be productive and get organised and also to get some shoes and maybe a haircut. I also wanted to see some of the town so I walked in the hot sun with little shelter up a small hill to where the petroleum museum and the old lady were. The old lady was the first oil well in Malaysia, opened in 1910. The museum meanwhile was supposed to be shut as it was Friday they close early at 2.15 the time it was now. There was nobody around and it was open so I went in and had a look round. There was a lot of information, some good on oil and oil in Malaysia and the transportation, discovery and extraction processes. After a while it became clear it was ok and there were other people in the museum.
Petroleum museum quiz: 1. Which country invented the toothbrush in 1498? 2. Which human cell lives the longest? 3. Miri is the 2nd largest city in Sarawak. When was it granted city status? I left and walked back to town and trued to go to a print place for business cards but they were closed. I got back and phoned my bank who were open now as it was 8am in the UK and they had blocked me because of a transfer I did but would hopefully unblock me. So I left and went round the big double connected shopping mall near the hostel looking for shoes. I found a few options and decided to have some food first as it was close to 6 and I always feel better making decisions on a full stomach. The chicken rice place was shut so I got a few things from a stall which was pretty filling for 6rm. After I went back and bought some cheap Dunlop shoes with orange trim for 60rm I did consider a few options but Nike and Adidas and such were more expensive than back home and not as well made while the hiking boots were just a bit to clunky and heavy. I got back to the hostel and there were 2 girls on the computer but I used the other one which was ok except it didn't read my phone. I was feeling tired from all that thinking so had a nap and woke up around 9 to do a few more things before going to bed at 11.30. Answers to Quiz: 1. China. 2. Brain cell can live a persons whole life. 3. 2005, so the noughties (incidentally what are we calling the current decade?)
