I woke up a few times and shifted position before eventually getting up around 7am. It was light and we should arrive in an hour. I went back to my seat around 7.30 and put my shoes on but the train was not moving so fast and at 8am we stopped for a long time. I had some more fruit but still had quite a bit left, 1kg or whatever it had been was just too much. We arrived after 9 and I left the station and walked around towards the hostel. I had booked High above hostel as it was on maps.me and also I had the address in English from booking.com and in Chinese from Agoda. It was hard dragging the suitcase again but I did not have that far too go. I got to the main road and had to avoid the motorbikes using the pavement and found the area with the flats. There was an estate agent so I asked them where I needed to go as they should know addresses and they pointed me in the direction. I got there and asked a security guard and surprisingly it was labelled 1 as the address was building 5. It was the right place and the hostel did look like a hostel and not someones flat. I got a bottom bunk and checked in before 10am which was nice so I had a shower and back in the room managed to bang my head hard on the window and found blood before heading out. I started by going to wall mart which was nearby and outside was a place selling shoes. They had some Nike and Adidas for 160 yuan but none fully leather so I left them and went in to the megastore. It did sell a lot including TV's, clothes, bikes and food, but some things weren't that cheap like the suitcases. I got a 1.25l bottle of juice, some fried rice, tofu and some buns but when I was at the checkout she couldn't scan the buns as they needed a bar code so I left them. I headed out avoiding motorbikes and went north on the main road getting a spinach type pita thing 2 patties for 5 yuan and I got to the museum. Kunming city museum had lots brochures with the museum as a whole had one brochure and each of the 6 permanent exhibitions had one and each had 1 page in English. First was a Buddhist pillar just in the auditorium, it looked ok, I went in the first room which was bronze works. It was well signed in English with exhibits from 3000 to 2000 years age. Upstairs was dinosaurs. Apparently China has discovered more bones than any other country but they only gad a few here and some dinosaur models. The flying tigers room was good as it included WW2 history. This was an air force started by American volunteers to combat the Japanese. Downstairs on the other side were fan painting and porcelain both a bit boring. I left and went to a nearby temple which had lots of buildings and was pretty good. A guy came up to me to say he was a guide and he spoke a little bit of English. I think he had some mental problems but he was harmless and kept repeating the same questions like where are you from. Outside was a white stone arch someone had marked on the map which was barely worth it. I headed west and came to a small park with water features and then I went to another park according to the map but there was no entry so I walked past and it looked quite nice but they'd blocked it with a fence and bamboo. I found an adidas shop but the prices were around 600 yuan and then there was another shoe shop where prices were lower but the shoes were terrible and another shoe shop for NB shoes only the b didn't stand for balance here, and the shoes were also 500 yuan and up. There was a small monument and then a mosque but I didn't want to mess around taking of my worn down shoes and I decided to see a market instead of another mosque. It was a food market with loads of motorbikes parked and I still had food. I carried on and crossed the road to see a park that had a few flowers but wasn't worth it as I had to cross back again where the park was barricaded. There was a monument to the war against Japan but I had to walk almost all the way around to the entrance and the building was inaccessible and didn't look like it had anything anyway so it was just the needle monument. I crossed to another park which was quite plain and then walked the wrong way and came to the central lake which looked ok. I went to see the church or cathedral I'd planned and it was s big box of a building, ok but maybe a bit modern. I headed to the military academy and walked next to the lake again. The academy was a 4 sided building with a square of grass in the middle and the first part had English translations but the part on expeditions was all in Chinese. It was a yellow building and apparently the Japanese were the first teachers and they also had pictures of the Japanese WW2 surrender which happened in Hanoi. I went to the nearby lake and crossed several of the bridges to see the mini lakes and the buildings around. There was a museum of water supply there so I had a look and it was because one of the lakes had been used to supply water to the city, before that people used wells. It was a small museum in what was the pumping station. I had a look at the toilet but it only had squat basins and no soap. I left the lake park and went to a nearby bookmarked place which was where someone lived but there was just a wall plaque to see. Then there was a house left in the old style but it only had 8 or so rooms and they were pretty small but it was ok for a quick look. I got a bit lost leaving before finding my way to the underground communist place. I wasn't entirely sure it was the right place but it was something and had a closing time of 4pm which had gone about 10 minutes before. There was a double pagoda nearby but they turned out both to have scaffolding on so not worth seeing. Next was Yuantong temple which charged 6 yuan and is open until 5pm. It was a nice and big temple with a few building and some spaces and water features, no wonder it was listed so high in wikitravel. I left and headed to a monument but it turned out to be inside the zoo which was only 20 yuan entrance and it closed at 7. I was tempted to go in but I still had a lotus park to see and I was also a bit tired so I headed on. The lotus park was about 20 minutes away as I had to walk round to the north side as well. It had a lake and a few buildings but not so much to see and it wasn't as nice as the central lake park from earlier. I decided to head back and took a bus as its just 2 yuan and got off to get to the subway which went right back near to the apartment. I walked round on the road to Walmart and went to the shoe place. I looked at trying on some black Nikes and Adidas but they didn't have the Nike in my size. The Adidas didn't have a great grip but it did seem more waterproof and had more support so hopefully it wouldn't fall apart. They were size 43.5 and just fit a bit snugly but there were no bigger shoes. That website I'd looked at was wrong size 42 was a size 8 not 9. Anyway I bought the Adidas for 160 and threw my old shoes in the bin and went into Walmart. I got some nuts in shells, 400g for 12 yuan and bought one of the buns I'd looked at earlier and needed help to get a price sticker on. Then I got some rice and some noodles cooked fresh and picked up more tofu. Finally I bought some biscuits, tomatoes, water and apples at 50% off price. I had a look around for a waterproof spray to make my jacket and bag cover waterproof but they didn't have any and I had a look at the suitcases as they had more than I thought but still all too expensive. I left as my food was getting cold and went back to the hostel and ate some of my feast and did a bit of research on trains as I wasn't sure if I should get another night train or sleep here another night and get a day train. I didn't decide but I did find that they had a washing machine for just 5 yuan so I washed some clothes. They also had a pool table but there was nobody to play, the few people in the hostel were watching things on their phones. I did a bit for my blog although I'd not seen an internet shop anywhere as almost everyone has a smart phone and lots have laptops. I hung my washing up outside and then read a bit before going to sleep around the usual time despite the long day.
