I woke up at 7.30 again feeling a bit tired, the blanket wasn't long enough again which made it hard to sleep properly. Someone was in the shower so I had to wait to use the toilet. The breakfast area was packed so I used the internet a bit and showered but the breakfast area was still packed. So I perched next to a high table and had my 6 slices of toast and made 2 sandwiches to go. I left my Nutella there for others to use and went back to my room where I realised it was pretty late as my flight was at 11.45 and it was 9 now so I would need to leave soon. I packed up and headed to the station and the trains ran pretty smoothly but I got to the airport around 10.30 and didn't know which terminal. I went upstairs to T3 and it wasn't that one so I connected to the internet and found out it was terminal 1. I got the link train and went to check in and despite not having my boarding pass printed and my luggage was overweight they checked me in ok. It was getting on for 10.45 and I needed to be at the gate 11.05 with boarding until 11.25 according to my boarding pass so I decided to see the koi pond and butterfly garden in t3 which meant getting the skytrain back. I got there and couldn't seem to go in the right direction and a few minutes of walking later I realised they were behind security so I couldn't go. I went back to my terminal and it was about 11.05 and the departures board said last call so I headed to the gate and they had boarded most people already. They had a water fountain so I filled up my bottle and boarded and my window seat was next to 2 children, great! I looked around for other seats but there were none better with a window and I wanted the view so I asked the kids to move and a woman asked if she could swap and sit next to her kids so I let her but now I had an aisle seat. I got up and found a free window seat at the back which meant no leaning back but I took it and got some photos, none good. They stewards came round with food and I was in the wrong seat but they called my name so I got my food, a disappointing chicken wrap, well it was ok but I'd overpaid. We arrived at 1.15 in Kuching and by the time I had my stuff through customs it was 2pm but I didn't have a hostel. I had googled several things and apparently there were no buses so I needed a taxi, but I wanted to know where to go so I searched around for internet and the airport wifi wouldn't work, then I tried Mc Donalds and it almost logged me on before telling me there were too many people on the server. I thought about getting a sim card but I still had one for Malaysia and they didn't seem to have that one here to top up. Eventually I found a machine that promised wifi for just 1 ringgit so I tried it and it worked and I found a few places in town and booked one called B&B inn which looked like an ok location and was quite cheap. I took a taxi in for the standard price of 26 ringgits which I paid at the desk and the hostel had a lock but the owner came down and opened up for me and checked me into a room that was empty apart from one bed where there were clothes and things he said were his so maybe he was sleeping in this room as well. I didn't really know what there was to see but there was a few places on the map so I headed out and it started raining so I got my umbrella but it was raining hard so I sheltered before deciding to go anyway and took cover where I could which was quite a bit as a lot of shops have corridors in front with overhanging buildings, probably because they get a lot of rain in this part of the world, but then maybe we should have that design more in the UK. I came to a Chinese temple and went in but it was fairly small and there were a few people sheltering there. I left and walked through a puddle on my way out which had collected already. Across from there was a Chinese museum which was free and quite good although it was a bit specialised and about Chinese people who had settled in Sarawak (this part of Borneo) and the type of things they had done. I walked on and went along the waterfront which had ok views of the other side but with the rain it looked pretty deserted and the shops and stalls there were not doing much business. I carried on with some shops to shelter under and then I came to a Gudwara and a soon after a Mosque which was pretty impressive. They were having prayer time so I didn't go in and walked on. I had looked at the map and there were 2 roads to cross the river, one on either side of the town so I headed towards one in the West and eventually got there but annoyingly my step counter wasn't working after all of the good work yesterday so I kept restarting my phone to get it to work which helped a bit. I crossed the bridge and there was the market nearby which was a Sunday market but it was late in the day and it was only for mornings so it was mostly packed up with a few fruit and vegetable places clearing up still.
I walked along close to the river on the other side and there was not much to talk about apart from 2 boys walking a pet goat. I got close to the nice looking mushroom building on this side of the river and there was also also a fortress there, but first I came to a jetty for boats and some people had disembarked but I didn't see a boat and didn't check anything. I carried on and there was a small river in the way so I had to go inland and eventually there was a wooden bridge I could walk across which went in between houses.
